Malawians woke up Friday morning, 7 September 2012 just to face new fuel prices. Pump price of petrol has changed from K485.60 to K539, diesel K475.00 to K521.90, and paraffin is now K434.30 up from K390.00.
According to the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) the upward adjustment are in line with their automatic pricing mechanism (APM).
The Nation newspaper of Friday 7 September 2012 says Mera used the APM to determine the new prices by considering rising trends of the world petroleum products and “other macro-economic fundamentals”.
This will be a big blow to Andiamo Education Institutions that rely on generators to pump water into the tanks whenever there is a power failure, as they have to dig dipper in the coffers to buy diesel.
The week that starts on 10 September, Andiamo will have on electricity for a total of eleven and half hours. According to the load shedding programme of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) released on Friday 7 September 2012 in the Nation newspaper, Andiamo will have no electricity on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
On Monday 10 September, it will be from 05:30 to 12:30; Wednesday 12 September, 12:30 to 17:00; and Thursday 13 and Friday 14 there will be no electricity from 17:30 to 21:00.
ESCOM says there will be this load-shedding programme “due to insufficient generation capacity”.
