Reliving 8 November 2013

It was on 8 November 2013, a day before Alleluya band celebrated their 35th anniversary in Balaka, when Fr. Mario Pacifici collapsed at the ground where the celebrations took place. Since that collapse, he was not seen in public neither did he walk that distance till he left for Italy for treatment. Today, he has arrived from Italy and the Andiamo family was there on the spot where he collapsed to welcome he. He walked today the same distance not very strong though but with a smile everyone here will remember. This time he has come with three volunteers.

Mbera Beneficiaries learn the Pang’ono Pang’ono way

Families sharing the maize

Families sharing the maize

On Thursday, 20 May, it was the turn of Mbera and Toleza families to receive maize that has been donated by Pang’ono Pang’ono through Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust. At Mbera something “expected” happened. There were more people than the maize available! Do we send them back? The organisers asked themselves. The solution was found from the people themselves.
“Let’s share a bag among five people,” they suggested. This is exactly what happened. Like the way Pang’ono Pang’ono Onlus has done by sharing the maize with the people of Balaka, the people have also shared among themselves. All went home happy. At least they have all something to eat while they wait for their maize to mature in the fields.

Pang’ono Pang’ono Onlus Rescues Hunger Stricken Families

"Thank you Pang'ono Pang'ono"

“Thank you Pang’ono Pang’ono”

Pang’ono Pang’ono Onlus, an association in Italy has through Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) donated bags of maize to families around Balaka who have been stricken by hunger.

About 600 families will benefit from this benevolence from an association that has for some time now believed in the mission statement of AYCT.

The donation is timely considering that this is the time that families will have to wait a little longer to have their maize mature and this is the time that hunger is painful.

Random interviews to the beneficiaries reveal that people are grateful to Pang’ono Pang’ono Onlus for this good gesture.

Distribution started on Wednesday, 19 February at Chiyendausiku and Mpulula. On Thursday the distribution exercise goes to Toleza and Mbera.

Over 20,000 farming households are food insecure in Balaka following last year’s erratic rains.

Mission Possible in Malawi

In February 1977 a young priest left Italy for Malawi, Africa for an adventure that continues till today.

His father, full of emotions, woke up early that morning, and did not want to greet his son as he did not know when he would see him again.

The young Mario was leaving for Malawi, an unknown land, with the apostolic mandate of “converting the sinners”. Stay with the poor. Serve the poor. The romantic dream, cultivated since he was a child, was going to be realized.

Africa opened to him when he arrived with a ramshackle airplane, in a desert airport, where a young African who he did not know offered himself to bring him to the “Fathers”. The fathers though of another congregation welcomed him well.

The young missionary was starting a beautiful life journey, of sharing, human and spiritual growth together with his new community.

On 4 February 2014 the same missionary found himself at the Lombardia Regional Council, (Milan, Italy). In the agenda was the vote approval for the allocation of sanitary machineries dismissed by the old Hospital of Bergamo (Ospedali Riuniti).

The advisor Mario Barboni presented a motion signed by all advisors from Bergamo. It was yet another attempt of give again hope to the project of sending instruments to Malawi.

It was indeed a special day, the Archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Scola visited the Regional Council and father Mario Pacifici had the chance to meet the Cardinal and the Regional President and recommended them the project for which he was there, so far away from his African environment.

At 13:15 in the council the motion was presented and us, two, were the only people really attentive at the discussion. A brief debate and the motion was finally unanimously approved. We started to clap hands like we were kids, despite our baldheads and white hair that witness our advanced age.  One of us was Father Mario who shouted: “GRAZIE!” (Thank you!).

Another step toward what we wish to be our shield. Another step, thanks to many that their commitment wanted to win in this attempt. In the council our striker was Mario Barboni: to him our heartfelt thanks!

Fr. Ronald Kalindawalo, the Mangochi Diocese Youth Chaplain celebrated mass with students of Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI) on Thursday, 6 February 2014.

In his homily, Fr. Kalindawalo reminded the students that Jesus is sending them to preach the Good News to their friends.  He also encouraged students to have friends in order to help one another. “No man is an Island,” he told the students

After the mass, Fr. Kalindawalo had an audience with all the Young Christian Students (YCS). He encouraged them to work hard in school for them to achieve what they are aspiring to be in the future.

“Every profession needs school,” he also stressed that the youth are the future church and the Church is relying on them.  They must start now to be active members of the church.

Fr. Kalindawalo encouraged them to read different books and Catechism about the youth in the church.

Fr. Kalindawalo has since thanked Alessandro Marchetti, the Director of Schools, for welcoming him on behalf of Fr. Mario Pacific and Don Cesare both the founding trustees of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust.
