Andiamo band performed well at the concert hence it qualified but they have been urged not to gaze at their previous conquests, because the forthcoming concert will need more than just skills but enough time for preparations.

Africa in Colours: The experience of Donatella and Elena in Malawi

IMG_6267

Donatella showing her work of art

“I came with an open heart and I found the Africa I thought”, these were the first words of Donatella, Italian volunteer, sharing the experience of living in Balaka, Malawi. Words that immediately confirm the goodness and generosity of her initiative of solidarity that she really wanted to take and have scheduled for so long. A gracious month donated, for a break, a holiday between the work and social tasks she had.

“I came to Africa for the first time with an open heart, because I think, this should be the way to live the African experience. I found in Malawi what I was thinking about Africa. I found it through hundreds and hundreds of educated and enthusiast pupils who crowd the nursery schools of the mission: St. Monica Nursery school in Balaka and Chikondi nursery school in Toleza, among others. I found the simplicity in the people of Malawi but I also experimented for the first time in my life the real poverty in a nation where to have a bed in the hut is a privilege”, says Donatella.

Between one activity and another, Donatella and Elena tried to share their experience with us, because even in Africa, even plenty of time is never enough to accomplish all the activities they had planned for: drawing, painting, decorating rooms of different places, such as the entrance of the new paediatric ward, rooms in the family house for ex-street kids at “Tigawane”, classes of the nursery schools, and again conjoining Dave Pabros with art lessons for boys and girls in the Andiamo secondary school art club. The volunteers have also engaged into administering Italian lessons to some members of the cooperative, without enough rest or even having simple meals they dedicate themselves to their jobs.

In this way Donatella and Elena approached with enthusiasm and generosity the reality of Malawi, knowing the different projects and managing, together with the youth of the cooperative to give their precious contribution.

Donatella, apart from bringing herself, her passion for arts and her enthusiasm in guiding and creating artworks together with kids of various age, also brought with her full luggage of necessary materials not found in Balaka: colours, brushes, glues, chalk basis, papers for decoupage and others. And again, other materials will arrive in big boxes sent through the container, that the wave of enthusiasm and creativity should continue even after her leaving.

Elena underlined that she has had a wonderful experience going beyond the difficulties that such tough experience might reserve. A merit to her and her knowledge in languages, especially English, if their experience have gone far in the details, making possible the dialogues and comprehensions needed in order to welcome and appreciate the local culture.

“The win is the testimony to us teachers and our boys that we are going the right direction” says Thom Damba; the principal at Andiamo music school.

“you are carrying the flag, so don’t you let your fans down” says Isaac Liwotcha the executive judge from Malawi Association of Musicians(MAM) advising the winning groups to swallow their pride and work hard to carry the trophy for Balaka and rest of Eastern region. He encouraged those who were left out that they build courage and try their luck next time.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Introduction

The following is an abstract of article from http://catholicism.about.com/od/beliefsteachings/tpgifts

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are enumerated in Isaiah 11:2-3. They are present in their fullness in Jesus Christ but are found in all Christians who are in a state of grace. We receive them when we are infused with sanctifying grace, the life of God within us—as, for example, when we receive a sacrament worthily. As the current Catechism of the Catholic Church notes, “They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them.” Infused with His gifts, we respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit as if by instinct, the way Christ Himself would.

h.s

Pope Francis on Pentecost Sunday

1. Wisdom

Wisdom is the first and highest gift of the Holy Spirit, because it is the perfection of faith. Through wisdom, we come to value properly those things which we believe through faith. The truths of Christian belief are more important than the things of this world, and wisdom helps us to order our relationship to the created world properly, loving Creation for the sake of God, rather than for its own sake.

2. Understanding

Understanding is the second gift of the Holy Spirit, and people sometimes have a hard time understanding (no pun intended) how it differs from wisdom. While wisdom is the desire to contemplate the things of God, understanding allows us grasp, at least in a limited way, the very essence of the truths of the Catholic Faith. Through understanding, we gain a certitude about our beliefs that moves beyond faith.

3. Counsel

Counsel, the third gift of the Holy Spirit, is the perfection of the cardinal virtue of prudence. Prudence can be practiced by anyone, but counsel is supernatural. Through this gift of the Holy Spirit, we are able to judge how best to act almost by intuition. Because of the gift of counsel, Christians need not fear to stand up for the truths of the Faith, because the Holy Spirit will guide us in defending those truths.

4. Fortitude

While counsel is the perfection of a cardinal virtue, fortitude is both a gift of the Holy Spirit and a cardinal virtue. Fortitude is ranked as the fourth gift of the Holy Spirit because it gives us the strength to follow through on the actions suggested by the gift of counsel. While fortitude is sometimes called courage, it goes beyond what we normally think of as courage. Fortitude is the virtue of the martyrs that allows them to suffer death rather than to renounce the Christian Faith.

5. Knowledge

The fifth gift of the Holy Spirit, knowledge, is often confused with both wisdom and understanding. Like wisdom, knowledge is the perfection of faith, but whereas wisdom gives us the desire to judge all things according to the truths of the Catholic Faith, knowledge is the actual ability to do so. Like counsel, it is aimed at our actions in this life. In a limited way, knowledge allows us to see the circumstances of our life the way that God sees them. Through this gift of the Holy Spirit, we can determine God’s purpose for our lives and live them accordingly.

6. Piety

Piety, the sixth gift of the Holy Spirit, is the perfection of the virtue of religion. While we tend to think of religion today as the external elements of our faith, it really means the willingness to worship and to serve God. Piety takes that willingness beyond a sense of duty, so that we desire to worship God and to serve Him out of love, the way that we desire to honor our parents and do what they wish.

7. Fear of the Lord

The seventh and final gift of the Holy Spirit is the fear of the Lord, and perhaps no other gift of the Holy Spirit is so misunderstood. We think of fear and hope as opposites, but the fear of the Lord confirms the theological virtue of hope. This gift of the Holy Spirit gives us the desire not to offend God, as well as the certainty that God will supply us the grace that we need in order to keep from offending Him. Our desire not to offend God is more than simply a sense of duty; like piety, the fear of the Lord arises out of love.pentecostpic

Pentecost Day Message to the Family of Andiamo and the Whole World

Yesterday was the day for Catholics all over the world to contemplate the solemnity of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit sent by the risen Christ upon his Church; an event of grace which filled the Upper Room in Jerusalem and then spread throughout the world. Mr. Joseph Bwezani; the patron of Young Christian Students (YCS) wrote the following article due the solemnity which was also read out in the YCS general meeting in Umodzi Hall yesterday, May 19.

IMG_5761

Mr. J. Bwezani; Patron of YCS (A.E.I)

If you remove a burning log from a fire, it soon dies out. It needs other burning pieces of woods around it to keep blazing brightly. In the same way, our passion for God’’ dies out if we try to follow Jesus alone, and don’t connect with a church that loves God. As we read in the Bible, God uses the church as an instrument of salvation and He also saved mankind through Jesus Christ. Since we have received the Holy Spirit today we really understand what is happening with God’s church all over the world. The church is God’s family. It exists to “be Him and spread His message’’ in the community. We belong not only to God but also to one another. The Christian life is about togetherness. Now, let’s see the church at its best as we are celebrating this day of Pentecost. I should therefore ask you my fellow friend to make use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit we have received.

Best technicians in the making

I sneaked into the work shop where Elias Mpinga; the instructor of Electrical Installation assigned the students to assemble a star delta starter motor system into operation. How curious it was to listen to the students explaining its working principle in fluent technical jargons and making sense, connecting the scattered parts and gathering the whole equipment up to life again.

“I can predict a good grade to my every student in Electrical Installation (Practical) come November when they will sit for their final trade test exams” says Elias, standing aside with folded arms saluting his own progress.

The students themselves challenged to carry out most of the basic works out there in as long as Electrical Installation is concerned.
