“The exams have started on a fair note and it is the same stuff we did in class,” Christopher Kaduya agrees with Innocent Mukoka on the nature of today’s Form 3 Geography paper. On the other hand Joyce Somanje complains the paper was just tough but still she hopes her hard work wont be in vain. The perspective of the students towards their exams is a clear indication that the exams will serve its purposed significance.

Fr. Mario Pacifici and Gogo Anna Kumchera

The gospel of the fourth Sunday in Lent was about the parable of the Prodigal Son but Fr. Mario Pacifici chose to tell a different story to the students of Andiamo Educaton Institutions (AEI) on Sunday, 10 March.

In his homily, he asked Anna Kumchera to speak to the students about her 93 years experience with life. Her’s was a short message.

“Trust in God.”

Gogo Anna Kumchera disclosed to the attentive students that through out her life, she has never smoked neither has she drunk any alcohol. She also revealed that she never cheated on her husband.

Gogo Kumchera celebrated her 93rd birthday silently on 5 March but Fr. Mario has since promised her dinner this Wednesday, 13 March. He also gave her a special rosary that does not have the usual five decades.

Gogo Kumchera is among the elderly that are provided a dignified life by Andiamo Cooperative under the pillar of Social Development. Under the “Agogo Project”, the elderly are given good shelter at what is called “Andrea Village” (a name given after the late brother of Fr. Mario, Andrea), food and their basic needs.

“Get up Stand up” Project Yields Fruits

The soil has degraded and traditional ways of farming do not apply these days. To bail farmers out from this, “Get up stand up” Project offers loans without interest for fertilizers and seeds. The vision is to see farmers yield a lot from small portions of land; hence it calls upon for modern farming methods. Farmers registered in the project are advised to follow instructions by the project’s agronomist so that they should realize bumper harvests.

8 acre farm for Miss Anna Njoloma

Miss Anna Njoloma, a graduate from the project, is an example of success stories. Having learnt the formulae for plenteous production she has stood on her feet and has grown 8 acres of sunflower. Sunflower is a precious stone in the local market, and at all cost Njoloma’s livelihood would never be the same.

Miss Njoloma; The “Get up stand up” cebrated Graduate

“The Project did its basic part, the rest I had to do by myself, why not?” says Miss Njoloma in an interview on Saturday, 9th of March. She continues to say that it is from Get up Stand up where she got the zeal that she can equally do it.

Now when andiamo looks at her farm, it is so sure that its labors have fallen on a fertile ground and these are the fruits.

Andiamo Trust; A Friend of the Youths

Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust has passionate affiliation with youths. Most of them are recruited from the Technical College. Most young men who graduate from the college manage their own workshops or get employed in metal or wood industries. Andiamo Trust has always been on the forefront in making efforts to equip the youth with different skills.

Andrea Murowa and Carlos Chirambe are the operators in the lathing machines. “We have a chance to upgrade our skills and yet we have been employed too”. On the lathe, they mould different parts ranging from bearings, shafts, bolts and nuts, skimming heads they also make threads and maintain pulleys.

“Many customers from within Balaka and neighboring bring their problems and we give solutions,” says Andrea. They also produce different parts for on-going projects, if needed, at Andiamo.

This works as motivation to the students at Andiamo Technical College because those students who display skills are likely to be hired to the different departments of Andiamo Trust.

The art of teaching

The Malawian government envisions in alleviating illiteracy as stipulated in its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Schools have been opened and equipped for such a cause.  Andiamo Trust had joined the bandwagon to share in the dreams of the government. It has opened a technical school and a secondary school. Both of these institutions do not just increase literacy but also mould young men and women into responsible leaders and citizens.

Its teachers are resourceful and insightful. They bear in mind the intricacy of learning. It is common knowledge that we learn things we pay interest in. Valeria Giassi; the Social Studies teacher, takes this as an advantage to introduce her lessons under a topic; ‘Human Rights violation and Conflict Resolution’ excitingly to steal students’ attention with a movie “Hotel Rwanda” that gives a crystal clear depiction about the Rwandan ‘Hutu-Tutsi Wrangle’. Upon entering the class, one could tell the pupils followed along with such an exclusive curiosity.

The adoption of media instruction in delivery of content by teachers is mostly promoted in today’s learning for students easily understand diverse materials by associating them to what they like most.

This device will be very useful even in the most remote areas of the district because it has a rechargeable battery and can give instant results at the bedside of the patient. This wonderful endowment has improved the quality of service provided at the clinic.

“We appreciate the donation. With this device we can provide much faster service to our patients” explains Jill Claus; the administrator at the Comfort Clinics.

San Marino for the Children Trust, an association from the Republic of San Marino, officially opened the San Marino Nursery School in Matola, Balaka on Thursday 28 February in a colourful ceremony.

Mr. Marino, representing the volunteers from San Marino and Andrew Galeta, the board chairman of the San Marino Trust cut the ribbon marking the official opening of the Nursery School that has an enrolment of 200 children.

The gathering which brought together people of different colours and creeds reminded everyone the cooperation that exists between the missionaries who came in the country with the locals and donors is bearing its fruits.

In his homily, Fr. Mario Pacifici, the founding trustee of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) who was also a Parish Priest for St. Louis Montfort Parish reminded the congregation how small they started in Malawi and how some people misunderstood the locals who worked them to the extent of calling them “Akapolo aAroma” (slaves of Romans).

Fr. Mario said this in reference to what they are achieving now after cooperating together.

Though at Matola there is no hydroelectric power from Electricity Supply Cooperation of Malawi (ESCOM), the community has now a maize meal and solar panels that help to pump water for everyone.

The republic of San Marino also known as the Most Serene Republic of San Marino is an enclave microstate surrounded by Italy, situated on the Italian Peninsula on the north-eastern side of the Apennine Mountains.

Its size is just over 61 square kilometres with an estimated population of over 30,000. Its capital is the City of San Marino. San Marino has the smallest population of all the members of the Council of Europe.

According to the Secretary of the group, Kim Mdala, the house of Amina Sumani fell on the night of 28 January 2013 while she was inside the house sleeping with her daughter and a nephew. Fortunately, the wall fell outwards.

“We bought bricks on credit worth K6000 (12.5 Euros) and we hope to give back the money when we sell our cotton later this year,” reveals Mdala.

Mdala says the group expects to the harvest to be better this year than the past two years though they will lose some maize due to too much rainfall.

The group intends to plant some crops for irrigation in future but this will be possible if they get an engine pump.

On the house issue, Mdala says as a group they have done what they could but they see that the only long term solution to Gogo Amina’s house is to build another house for her, a thing they cannot manage.

Get Up Stand Up is a micro credit project under Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) which is funded by Association of Lawyers in Bergamo that gives fertilizers to farmers who in turn give back the loan after they harvest without any interest.
