Four youths from Balaka, participated in the National Cross Country Competitions on Saturday, 9 February at Kamuzu Institute of Sports in Lilongwe.

Guided by trainers Mr. Dennis Phiri and Miss Dalitso Starlet, the four athletes have shown that they are improving their talent mainly in running long distances.

Eleven year old, Enelessi, from Mbera, who is in Standard 8, having won the regional competitions in Zomba 2 months ago, registered another positive result finishing 13 out of more than 100 athletes across the country. Her friend Hilda Kawenda from Andiamo Secondary School finished 21 in the same Junior Girls 6 km.

Eric James and Ulanda finished on 14 and 23 respectively in the 8 km Junior for the Boys.

This was the first time that these athletes took part in the national competition. The athletes say lessons learnt will renew their passion for running and they look forward to register better results.

The trip from Balaka to Lilongwe was made possible because of the support from Franco Fiorina, a volunteer of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust and the Andiamo Education Office, through the Andiamo Wings of Hope Association of Athletes (a sports association of Andiamo that gives opportunities of training and competitions to different sports to the youth of Balaka).

Students of Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI) will soon be accommodated in one campus following the construction of a new boys hostel, which started on Monday 28 January 2013.

According to Franco Fiorina, a volunteer from Italy who also built the new girls hostel in the same campus, by the time he leaves on 18 April this year, the hostel will have been on the roofing level.

“I have found Phillipo [foreman] and his team in high spirits and I believe together we can achieve what we want.” Franco says the boys and him know each other and he is sure that if there are no unforeseen problems they will achieve what they want.

Asked how he feels to see girls occupying the hostel he and his team constructed last year, Franco that it gives him more satisfaction mainly because the hostel has also new beds.

The new boys hostel will accommodate sixty boys mainly from Andiamo Technical College.

Malawi Hospitals have no drugs

"We thank you"

Often women are the ones who suffer in a crisis like this

Malawi’s Minister of Health Catherine Gotani Hara has disclosed that public hospitals, especially district and referral centres, in Malawi have run out of 95 per cent of essential drugs.

The Nation newspaper of Wednesday, 30 January 2013 the minister says currently the government of Malawi has only five per cent of all needed medicines and supplies for the public hospitals.

Speaking in Lilongwe on Tuesday, 29 January, the Minister disclosed that the major contributing factor is that the largest procurement of medicines and medical supplies for this country was done in October 2009. According to Hara, this was enough consignment to last 12 months.

This situation has put pressure on private clinics like Comfort “Community Hospital” in Balaka.

The Administrator of Comfort Community Hospital, under Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) Jill Claus says as of 29 January 2013, the Paediatric ward was full to capacity and they had to use the isolation rooms and that the Outpatient Department has recorded an increase in the number of patients.

Andiamo Students remember victims of Shoah

Some of the children who were killed

Some of the children who were killed

Students of Andiamo Secondary School on Monday, 28 January 2013 observed a minute of silence to remember those who lost their lives during the holocaust.

The students were also given time to debate the importance of having the Holocaust Remembrance Day to avoid repeating the same mistakes in future.

The holocaust, also known as the Shoah, was the mass murder of genocide of approximately six million Jews during World War II, a programme of systematic state-sponsored murder by Nazi Germany, led by Adolph Hitler and the Nazi Party, throughout German-occupied territory.

It is said that of the nine million Jews who had resided in Europe before the Holocaust, approximately two thirds were killed. Over one million Jewish children were killed in the Holocaust, as were approximately two million Jewish women and three million Jewish men.

Unexpected change

Guilia and the crew

Guilia and the crew

On Wednesday, 16 January 2013 during lunch, we gathered at Nankhombe house (volunteer house) to bid farewell to Giulia Bonfanti who leaves today 17 January for Italy. Among the guests at table were the once street kids under Tigawane Project of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT).

During the speeches time, we were told that during her stay in Malawi, Giulia spent her time with these kids, teaching them lots of skills.

Eugenio Njoloma, speaking as the Deputy Coordinator of Tigawane Project, commended Giulia for her humility and willingness to work with the once street kids.

Giulia was supposed to leave in April but because of other unforeseen circumstances, she has changed her programme to leave today, 17 January. Go well Guilia! But wait a minute, when I am talking about unexpected change, I am not talking about Guilia’s change of programme but the “street kids” change of behaviour.

Not long time ago, yes before the Tigawane Project kick started by AYCT to take street kids away from the township of Balaka and give them a house, education… I knew Martin Masauko (the first recruit of the project). His deeds were older than his age. He moved with a knife, not for self-defence, but to attack for sure. Bars were his home.

Those who gave him money to buy a cigarette for them, regretted for doing so because he could vanish with the money. That was the Martin I knew and I thought was still, till this morning. Yes, I have a different new picture of him and his crew now.

This morning, before I entered the Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI) Office, I saw Martin together with his fellow “street kids” in their school uniforms, running towards where I was. When I saw them, I was thinking that maybe they wanted to ask for exercise books or something else.

They did not come to ask for anything but to give me what they had found. In Martin’s hand was a wallet.

“Sara, tatola chikwama ichi muli Ndalama mwina ndi za mwana wa sukulu,” (Sir, we have found this wallet and there is money inside and may be it belongs to one of the students here) Martin told me.

I counted the money. K5500 (€12)! Inside the wallet, I also found a bankcard that belongs to Lusayo Zimba, an Electrical Installation student.

When I went to Lusayo explaining to him that the “street kids” had found his lost wallet, he couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t too. Not too soon. Thanks to all people who support this project. It is working!

Gogo Angella Govati laid to rest

Late Angella Govati

Late Angella Govati

Last time she spoke in the presence of the founding trustee of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT), Fr. Mario Pacifici, was during mass on 30 December 2012, a day before Fr. Mario left for Italy.

Gogo Angella Govati then, told the congregation at Nankhombe chapel that she was feeling well health wise. When she was asked to explain her friendship with Kantema and Rodua, she said jokingly that Kantema had improved and that he never caused her any problems with her mat any more. Kantema and Rodua are young boys with mental challenges who have stayed with Fr. Mario since they were very young.

Today Gogo Govati spoke from her coffin. She told us that every human being deserves a dignified life disregarding their age and sex.

Growing up in a society that sometimes despise the elderly because of different beliefs like witchcraft, Gogo Angella found a home at Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) under the pillar of Social Development. Together with other elderly women she was given a home and a community to at least have a dignified life.

Speaking during the funeral ceremony, Mr. Clement Kulapa thanked Fr. Mario Pacifici for giving the elderly, who have no homes, a dignified life they deserve.

Andrew Galeta, the Executive Director of AYCT told the mourners that the Fr. Mario and Don Cesare, the founding trustees of AYCT sent their condolence messages to the bereaved family. Galeta reminded the gathering that the mission of looking after the elderly should not be left in the hands of Fr Mario and Don Cesare alone but that it must be the mission of everyone especially young people.

Gogo Angella Govati died on 12 January 2013 at Balaka District Hospital.
