John Lailo, Andiamo’s Pioneer

John Lailo, one of the pioneers of AYCT

When I visited Andiamo garage on Thursday, 20 September 2012 I found Mr. Kamanga very busy with the insurance documents. I was told that the insurances for Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust vehicles would expire on Monday, 22 September 2012. Such is life now at AYCT. Vehicles. Vehicles. Vehicles.

My visit did not end up there. I went to the Carpentry section where I met one called John Lailo. His story is both interesting and inspiring.

John Lailo was once an employee of a Mr Nanthambwe of Chiendausiku. John was the one responsible for the two cows that were pulling an oxcart that Mr Nanthambwe owned. In our chat he told me that he was the employee that Nanthambwe could trust but the fact remained, he was an employee because of the cows that the employer had.

How did he find himself at Andiamo then? Alleluya band had been formed. What we call Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust now was in its infant stage. The founders wanted to start building the structures of Andiamo but they had no cars to ferry bricks from point A to B. Why not buy cows that could pull an ox cart!

Andiamo representatives went to Mr Nanthambwe to ask if they could buy his only two cows. He agreed but with a price!

“You can’t take the cows and leave behind the shepherd. You have bought what was his job here. Take John with you.” That is how John Lailo found himself at Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust. With the oxcart, the founders of AYCT built the first projects. Such a humble beginning.

John Lailo is the long serving employee of AYCT.

“I cannot show you anyone who came before me. I am the oldest member here,” he says.

You can read more about John Lailo in the book to be released in 2014 about AYCT.

Andiamo Secondary School Results, Our Success

Andiamo Secondary School student

The 2012 Junior Certificate Examinations (JCE) results are out. Like last year, Andiamo Secondary School has another 100% passing rate. So far, Andiamo Secondary School has had national exams twice and both have been successful. Who gets the credit?

When results are out like this and students have done well as has been the case at Andiamo Secondary School, only the teachers get the credit. Why not? They are the ones who were teaching. In other schools where they have not registered 100% passing rate, they have teachers too. If the students have not passed there, it means their teachers were lazy!

While I congratulate the teachers for the job well done, let me say it without any regrets that the success of Andiamo Secondary School goes beyond the classroom where the teacher stays with their students.

Workers from other pillars of AYCT construction a new girls’ hostel

Andiamo Education Institutions campus, where Andiamo Secondary School is located, is conducive for learning. Without comparing the structures we have at AEI with other schools, structures of Andiamo Secondary School cannot be rated as below standards nor could we use the word “average”.

Unlike other schools where the owners come to ask “how much” fees the bursar has collected from students, here they ask what is it that is lacking.

Where students are lacking financially, there are some people who are ready to sacrifice in times of financial crisis like this one to save one Malawian child.

By the way, almost half of the students who have passed their 2012 JCE have sponsorships from some well-wishers from Italy. Here are some students who could not have managed to be in a school like Andiamo Secondary School.

Andiamo Secondary owes its success to Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) too. In the first place, without AYCT, the secondary school could not have been there. Every time we have a problem at AEI, the other three pillars of AYCT, Healthcare; Sports and Culture; and Social Development come in to play their part.

In short, the success of Andiamo Secondary School is the success of AYCT and there is need to continue to cooperate to achieve more together!

Andiamo graduates 26 in vocational training

A group photo of graduants

At least 26 students were on Friday awarded with certificates in tinsmith and tailoring at Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) in Balaka.

Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) supported the training, which ran for four weeks. During Friday’s graduation ceremony, 20 people graduated in tinsmith whereas six graduated in tailoring.

Speaking when he presided over the ceremony TEVETA training programmes specialist Ishmael Ali urged the graduates to use their skills by creating self-employment.

“The knowledge you have gained here will be wasted if you don’t put it to good use. Open up small businesses that will help to improve your livelihoods,” said Ali.

Ali bemoaned the low participation of women in vocational skills development, which he said, hinders women economic empowerment. He, however, commended Andiamo for its commitment in providing skills development to many youths in the country.

Patrick Bwanali

Speaking on behalf of AYCT’s Executive Director, Patrick Bwanali, who is the Coordinator of Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI) said his institution is committed to promoting education and vocational skills development to many people in the country. He, too, urged the graduates to use the knowledge and skills they have acquired.

“It is our hope and belief that you will be self-reliant as you’ll be able to start your own businesses,” said Bwanali.

Bwanali then applauded the relationship that exists between Andiamo and Teveta. “Let me commend Teveta who are helping us to fulfil our vision, of empowering the youth in the country, with the financial assistance they give us. I would love if this relationship continues,” he said.

Andiamo in an electrifying mood

In a party mood

It all started on Saturday 8 September when Eugenio Njoloma tied a knot with his long time sweetheart Hellen at St. Louis Catholic Parish. Today it is the day not to forget for both the family of Walter and Angela and the students of Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI).

Walter and Angela.

Walter and Angela during the Mass Celebration

Walter was once a classmate of Fr. Mario Pacifici, now the Founding Trustee of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust. While Mario stayed in the seminary till he was ordained, Walter married Angela with whom he is celebrating with 37 years in marriage! This family is here to shoot a video that will document 35 years of Alleluya Band in the year 2013.

AEI students

AEI opened for the new academic year on 3 September and Fr. Mario Pacifici chose today 9 September 2012 to welcome all the students where they are asked, “to live our lives and grow in life”.

Holy Mass

Mass started at 9. The schools’ choir was joyful. They sang with you and they put everyone in a prayerful mood suitable for a Sunday like today. In attendance, were people from AYCT including the Director and his Deputy.

During the homily, Fr. Mario did not mince words to the students. He told the students not to feel forced into doing anything.

“You are not chained. Be proud of what you have. Help those that have problems. Let us grow the way God would want us to grow,” said Mario.

Alleluya Band

In essence, Alleluya Band members are the hosts to Walter and Angela. The band did not disappoint on Sunday either. Led by Coss Chiwalo and Gertrude Naluso they showed why they are the oldest band in Malawi.

Coming straight from two shows, in Nkhotakota on Friday and Mwanza Motel on Saturday, the band moved not only the students to the floor but also some volunteers from Italy.

Paul Subiri lost his voice but he did not lose his drumming hands. Coss led with example too.

Lessons for the students

Fr. Mario Pacifici during mass

Fr. Mario says that there are different vocations. “All are good,” he gives an example of Walter who chose married life, and him who chose priesthood. Like Eugenio Njoloma, their teacher, they can marry in future and be together with whoever they chose to marry for a long time like what Walter and Angela have just shown them.

Speechless

Angela was speechless. The mood was beyond any description. Walter spoke but only few words.

“When we here about Malawi, we are told that it is the Warm Heart of Africa.” These are not only words but “we have felt it”.

Walter has since asked for collaboration with AYCT.

Fuel Prices Up, AEI to suffer more.

Watering flowers like this will be a luxury soon

Malawians woke up Friday morning, 7 September 2012 just to face new fuel prices. Pump price of petrol has changed from K485.60 to K539, diesel K475.00 to K521.90, and paraffin is now K434.30 up from K390.00.

According to the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) the upward adjustment are in line with their automatic pricing mechanism (APM).

The Nation newspaper of Friday 7 September 2012 says Mera used the APM to determine the new prices by considering rising trends of the world petroleum products and “other macro-economic fundamentals”.

This will be a big blow to Andiamo Education Institutions that rely on generators to pump water into the tanks whenever there is a power failure, as they have to dig dipper in the coffers to buy diesel.

The week that starts on 10 September, Andiamo will have on electricity for a total of eleven and half hours. According to the load shedding programme of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) released on Friday 7 September 2012 in the Nation newspaper, Andiamo will have no electricity on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

On Monday 10 September, it will be from 05:30 to 12:30; Wednesday 12 September, 12:30 to 17:00; and Thursday 13 and Friday 14 there will be no electricity from 17:30 to 21:00.

ESCOM says there will be this load-shedding programme “due to insufficient generation capacity”.

Despite the unavailability of results for Junior Certificate Examinations (JCE), all classes at Andiamo Secondary School resumed on Tuesday 4 September 2012.

A visit to all the four classes has shown that teachers were busy teaching in all the classes.  When Ellen and Martha Yohane were asked how prepared they are for the new academic calendar, they say they are ready to face the new academic year. Ellen and Martha are sisters and both are in Form two.

Group of Volunteers left for Italy

Claudio, Daniela, Paolo, Simona, Bruna and Luigi left this morning, 31 August 2012 for Italy after a beautiful experience in Malawi. Manuel and Nadia will leave Saturday, 1 September. Claudio shared his long experience with Andiamo Youth Cooperative with us:

“It was in 2005 when I came for the first time in Balaka, thanks to Franco Fiorina who told me about Malawi and Father Mario Pacifici who welcomed me here. The same year I organized the event “3 days of music for Africa” in Lozio (BS), Italy, where Alleluya Band performed. From that time I have always come to Malawi. By the way I also decided with my wife Ada to marry here in 2008”

Claudio Canossi, himself an expert plumber, manager of Beca Impianti and President of the Association “Amici della Natura” (Friends of the nature) has supported many of the projects of Andiamo Youth Cooperative.

In 2005 he participated in the beginning of the works for the realization of Andiamo Education Campus and cooperated in sending structures that we used to erect the school’s cafeteria. In 2006 delivered a plumbing course for the workers of the Cooperative.

Group in Kwisa Village

Manuel, Nadia, Simona, Daniela, Paolo, Claudio at Kwisa Village toether with Paul Subiri and his brother

Not only that, he helped in the solar panel scheme of the Volunteer House and many other plumbing projects all around Balaka. Together with his technical support he has been bringing plumbing materials worth thousands of Euros (€).

Most recently, he has already worked on a solar panel that will make the new girls’   hostel have warm water. We thank him this.

“I would like to promote a kind of Social Tourism through “Amici della Natura Association” so that many other visitors could come and appreciate the natural sites of Malawi and especially his social and cultural value,” he adds.

This year he came with three friends: Paolo, Simona and Daniela. Paolo, a Design Engineer helped him in the mapping of the plumbing scheme of Kankao Orphanage and realized a proposal for the optimization of the project. Daniela, a tailor, delivered a tailoring course to Tiwonge Mkandawire, Head Teacher for Tiyende Women in Development School and promised to sew some of the new costumes for Alleluya Band members while Simona, a physiotherapist, used her professionalism to different children in difficulties.

With them, the veteran volunteers Bruna and Luigi also left. While in Malawi Bruna helped in the Volunteer House, cleaning, sewing, cooking and always taking care of all the volunteers and local workers.

Bruna

Luigi, her husband repaired many things, maintained the carpentry machines of the School Carpentry workshops and many others. Together they brought the big Bell to Andiamo Education Institutions, which will stress the time for the all activities.

Manuel and Nadia who leave tomorrow participated in the fitting of the Kankao Orphanage purifier and at Mbera Hospital respectively. The time that Nadia was here, she helped three women give birth.

Pang’ono Pang’ono and Andiamo bring safe water to Kankao Orphanage

Andiamo workers and volunteers together with Pang’ono Pang’ono Volunteers have managed to fix a water purifier machine at Kankao Orphanage for just two weeks.

Sponsored and sent by Pang’ono Pang’ono Association to Malawi, the purifier will give safe water to the children at the orphanage run by Poverelle Sisters.

“The steps to fit the purifier were many and not easy at all. We had to transport it [the purifier] from Andiamo to Kankao, and then we had to map the plumbing scheme of the orphanage to understand the best way to fit the purifier. Fortunately I met at the Volunteer House, Claudio Canossi, himself an expert plumber and experienced volunteer in Malawi who gave me a big help,” narrates Manuel.

He says that together with Paolo Lanzetti, a Design Engineer and two Andiamo plumbers Lyson and Jeffrey they made a beautiful team able to finalize the work.

He says now there is safe and drinkable water for the orphans and also for the washing machines.

“However, the scheme should be improved in order to work better on the whole structure of the orphanage,” he adds.

Claudio and Paolo, both volunteers from Brescia, Italy says they were happy to work hand in hand with volunteers from Pang’ono Pang’ono Association.

“I was happy to offer my professionalism for this Project of Pang’ono Pang’ono for the Kankao Orphanage cooperating with Manuel, Paolo and the Andiamo plumbers Lyson and Jeffrey,” says Claudio Canossi, Andiamo Volunteer since 2005, and President of the Association called “Amici per la natura” who has really worked hard in several plumbing projects in Andiamo donating time and precious plumbing materials.

“I’m sure that the project of Pang’ono Pang’ono will be continued and improved for the benefit of the Orphanage and Kankao Sisters.”

Paolo, the Designer Engineer who accompanied him produced in fact a new scheme based on the actual plumbing situation that will be proposed to Pang’ono Pang’ono for the optimization of the project.

“We should look forward to breaking up the scheme in more fractions so that the system should work better and serve the entire structure of the orphanage,” says Paolo.

The Kankao project has been an example of real cooperation between Pang’ono Pang’ono who’s president is Marco Baggiani, Andiamo Youth Cooperative and volunteers which has brought fruits and better conditions to Kankao Orphanage, 10 km distant from Andiamo.

Sister Barbara, satisfied for the new purifier is also planning to use the water trashed by the purifier to irrigate a piece of land so that no drops of water are lost.
