Water at the new wards

Water at last!

All is set. It is just a matter of when Comfort Clinics will be made a community hospital. On Thursday 30 August the 5000 litre water tank became functional.

The tank, according to Mr. Laison Nsamala, head of plumbing section of Andiamo, will supply water only to the new wards, which have a bed capacity of 35 patients.

Comfort clinics fall under the pillar of “Health and Sanitation” of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT).

Comfort Clinics opened its doors on 21 May 1997 and has three functional departments namely: Out Patient Department (OPD); Dental Department; and the Maternity Department.

Currently, AYCT is just waiting when Comfort Clinics will be called a Community Hospital having added well-furnished Paediatric Ward with a capacity of 18 beds and a Male and Female wards.

Last year alone, the outpatient department of Comfort Clinics served about thirty thousand (30,000) patients.

Harry says the course has greatly opened them to “competitively put to challenge civil works”. The course has taught them how to handle project sites, consultants and even engineers.

“I would like to take this opportunity to applaud the Marandimo management for sending us to the training using its own resources, resources that were meant to help other managerial aspects of the company.

Not an ordinary Sunday

Today in the Catholic liturgical calendar is the Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time but at Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT), this day was a special Sunday for many reasons.

Firstly, Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI) received a bell from Italy through volunteers from Italy.

Secondly, it is Alessandro Marchetti’s feast day. Alessandro is the Coordinator of AEI.

Thirdly, it is the last Sunday for some volunteers from Italy to be in Malawi as they are leaving for Italy soon.

During the mass, that Fr. Mario Pacifici concelebrated with Don Cesare, the main celebrant Fr Mario thanked the family of Luigi and Bruna for bringing the bell all the way from Italy. He stressed the importance of the bell to the AEI campus.

“Keeping time in a community like ours is of greatest importance,” said Fr Mario who also thanked some students who graced the occasion for being present in the campus when during this time of holidays.

Fr. Mario Pacifici stressed to the students that discipline begins when we respect time.

On his turn, Alessandro Marchetti thanked the congregation for wishing him a happy feast day.

AEI campus has a new tank

The new tank

Water problem at Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI) campus may be a thing of the past as a 5000 litre tank has been erected to support the only tank that has been in the campus for some time.

The new 5000 litre tank will supply water to the two boys hostels and the technical school. In times when the electric pumps are not working, there are also two boreholes, one at the girls hostel and the other one close to the boys’ hostels.

Before the new tank, the campus had only one tank that was not enough to supply water to about 250 students. In the 2012/13 new academic calendar, AEI campus will have a minimum of 300 students.

Don’t forget how to smile – Margherita Fabbri

The smiling Margherita

Margherita Fabbri is a 29 year old Italian consultant, specialized in development economics and in particular on development strategies for small and medium enterprises, microfinance and gender equity issues. Before she came to Malawi she has been living in Italy, Belgium, Peru and the United States. She says she loves travelling and spend significant amounts of time abroad, ‘cause I found this is the only way to get a bit closer to different cultures and new people, learning from them and sharing experiences, trying to get a bit better every time’. Interesting indeed! Patrick Bwanali had a chat with her and this is what she says…

Why are you in Malawi?

I am in Malawi to work on a 3-month technical assistance on some of the activities carried out within the Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust, in Balaka. While working with AYCT staff, I represent the Italian agency LAMA and the Italian construction company CMB, which is financing part of the project. The objective of this collaboration/assistance is to improve the work relationships with the Italian partners, getting a better understanding of the current needs of the project and trying to find a better allocation of the resources financed by CMB.

While in Malawi what have you done so far?

I have been working hand in hand with our Malawian partners in Andiamo, and especially on issues related to the recently created construction company Marandimo, as well as on the analysis of the productive sections of AYCT, in order to develop better work strategies, planning and book-keeping methods. Also, I have been working together with the women members of the microfinance rotating fund established a couple of years ago within Andiamo, in order to support them to develop reliable and sustainable business ideas, that could be easily financed in the future through the injection of new resources in the rotating fund.

Some thousands kilometres away from home, what do you miss from home?

The only thing I really miss when I am abroad are my friends and my families, as I wish they could be here with me to share my experiences, and have the privilege of seeing what I see and understand by themselves what is sometimes difficult to explain with words…

What was your first impression when you first came to Malawi?

I was astonished by HOW red was the red earth…!

In your opinion, what must be done to achieve maximum results from the Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust and CMB collaboration?

I wish the cooperation will keep on being fostered strongly by both sides, and I think that the first thing we should maintain is constancy in communications, since this is the first step for an enduring and productive collaboration.  In the specific work they lead together, CMB and AYCT are faces of the same coin and I think both of them should definitely grab the opportunity to learn a lot from each other and from this unique experience.

Anything to say to people both in Malawi and Italy?

Italians, don’t forget how to smile and, if you do, come to Malawi and refresh your memory!

Malawians, never never never give up!

Four Pillars of AYCT according to AEI

On 3 September, Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI) open their doors for a new 2012/13 academic calendar. Preparations are underway to make sure that everything is in order before students arrive.

Builders under the pillar, social development working on the new hostel

Builders and plumbers are busy to make sure that the new girls hostel that has a capacity to host 80 girls is ready before the opening day. Since last week, painters have been busy repainting hostels and classrooms so that they are all in good shape.

This year will be a big challenge to AEI office too. A challenge, because for the first time we shall have all the four classes in the secondary school. This will not only be a tall order to the teachers but also administratively.

As we continue to work with government through the Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA), we also expect about 40 new students who will pursue different courses through out technical schools. AEI campus will have a minimum of 300 young people this year!

During these preparations for the new academic calendar, I have come to appreciate the role the four pillars of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) namely Education; Sports and Culture; Health; and Social Development play and move together.

Andiamo pillars

How could a three-year secondary school build its own girls hostel, for example? How could we be able to save enough money to renovate all the hostels and classes? Through the collaboration of AYCT and our development partners (volunteers) in Italy, we now have a new girls hostel.

While some helped us financially, one volunteer, Franco Fiorina spent a good three months building the hostel with the local builders. AEI officials were not involved directly in the actual building, but builders of AYCT who fall under the pillar Social Development. All the painters that are busy renovating the hostels are not directly working under the Education Pillar but the Social Development pillar.

Last year AEI were not starved of entertainment either. Alleluya Band, which is under the pillar Sports and Culture, was available any time we had a function within the campus. It is our sincere hope that they will also be available this year when we shall have our first ever graduation ceremony!

Alleluya Band in 2012 tour. Picture by Di Natale Gianluca

Alleluya Band members did not only offer us entertainment. They did more than this. They are the ones that built the school! Through their overseas trips, the band has raised funds to achieve the objectives of the mother AYCT. While many people have not understood the objectives of the yearly tours of the band, the band has helped to ‘build’ AYCT to be where it is now. By the way, the founding trustee of AYCT, Fr. Mario Pacifici has just disclosed that through the 2012 of Alleluya band, Andiamo Secondary School will have a fully furnished laboratory!

Some may ask, what has the Health pillar anything to do with AEI? At AEI, we are looking forward to the day when those responsible will declare that Comfort Clinics become a community hospital. In times of sickness that need admission, students have to be brought to the government hospital.

Though the government hospital is a not very far away from AEI, there are many problems that are faced there. If it is not lack of drugs like many government hospitals, then it could be congestion.

While there are people who have shown commitment to helping the students in times difficult like this like Gertrude Naluso, Judith Kalambo and more recently Yasinta Munlo, the elevation of Comfort Clinics to a community hospital will help us a lot because of the introduction of the new adult ward.

We are also aware that our preparations would be in vain, if students are unable to report for classes because of lack of school fees. We are always grateful to volunteers in Italy who in times of financial crisis, like this, sacrifice some money to help some deserving students get education through our institutions.

National team coach trains Balaka basketballers

Hope Chisamanje with the basketball players at Andiamo court

Junior National Team coach for Basketball, Hope Chisamanje trained basketball players in Balaka at Andiamo Basketball court today 20 August 2012.

Speaking right on the court when he was training the players, Hope says he intends to train coaches for basketball in the secondary schools. According to him, this is the only way basketball can be promoted in the schools.

Hope Chisamanje

The national team coach, says he would like to work hand in hand with Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI) to see “how best we can help basketball in Balaka”.

Sydney Rodney Lungu, one of the players who underwent the training says the training is helpful to them.

“Everybody can play basketball but Hope has helped us to know the basics,” says Sydney.

This is not the first time that basketball players from Balaka have undergone basketball training. In April this year, Calciolari Guido, a medical expert with a passion for basketball came together with Italian trainers Anzani Mario and Giulia Cortesi who drilled players from 14 schools around Balaka in skills such as attacking, defending and shooting, and the rules of the game.

During the two week training, they distributed 60 basketballs and 200 jerseys.
