In the tribute, Soldier sings that the death of the president should unite Malawians despite the difference that might be there.

In the song, he says death comes when we are thinking of other things and he advises that since sometimes love on this earth ends when one is buried so should our differences end when one is buried too.

“For him [Bingu], it is gone, we should now look into our hearts and see if we are ready,” goes one of the lines of the tribute that is in Chichewa.

Coss Chiwalo of Alleluya band and the one responsible for Alleluya Studios says the tribute was recorded by Lulu while Dan Sibale did flute.

“I just did the backing vocals,” says Coss.

Lucius Banda is a graduate of Alleluya band. He now owns Zembani band and he was once a Member of Parliament (MP) of Balaka Central constituency

Alleluya Band’s Day

Alleluya Band leaves for Italy this May where it will hold more than 40 shows. People may be interested to know the band’s daily schedule. The web office asked Mayamiko Taferakaso, one of the band members, to share with us how the band members spend their day and how they prepare for international tours like the one they will have in May. This is what Mayamiko told the web office.

The band members train each day from Monday to Saturday. Each morning all the band members must sign in the register book at their office to show that they are present.

Like soldiers, before doing anything, each band member cleans the instrument they play and the hall where they practice.

When all is said and done, the band leader, now Coss Chiwalo tells them what to do on that particular day and start their practice. Mayamiko says this practice is not non-stop as they break at 9:45 am and 12:00 pm for tea and lunch respectively.

In the afternoon, they meet at 1:30 to continue practicing. Mayamiko says that at times, the band members relax by listening to their own music. He also says that every Monday, a teacher from the Andiamo Music School comes to teach them music.

What if they are preparing for an international tour as they are doing now? Preparations are different, says Mayamiko.

He says the group is divided into two groups, one of dancers and the other of those who play instruments.

These practice separately for three days in a week and later meet to work as a group. Program changes when there is only a month to go.

Mayamiko says when it is a month to go, they train thrice a day, in the morning, afternoon and evening!

Alleluya Band tours are always done with a purpose to support the objectives of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust.

Bread and butter from Ice cream

Do you want Vanila, Strawberry, Banana, Chocolate or Italian Ice cream? Joyce Kazembe will do it for you. Born in Fatima Village in Nsanje, in the Lower State of Malawi 28 years ago, Joyce never thought that life would be as it is now as she lost her mother in 1996. She had no choice but to stay with her only aunt.

Life wasn’t simple. She was asked to stop going to school to help her aunt with household chores. Other days she forced herself to go to school but she has no stationery like exercise books and writing materials.

In 1998, Joyce joined Tiyende Women in Development Training Centre of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust to study tailoring. It was while here that she was asked to start working in Andiamo Ice Cream Shop. With the help of Francis Pensulo, late Bibiana Njoloma and other volunteers from Italy, Joyce managed to learn how to make different flavours of ice cream within a period of 3 months.

“Because of my dedication I managed to learn how to handle customers and taking care of all the machines at the shop,” says Joyce. She adds that since she started working, she has taught six other people how to make Ice Cream.

Joyce, a mother of three, says the skills she has acquired for the time she has been working are a big treasure for he since she can work at any Ice Cream shop around the globe.

“Now I am able to smile again because  I am able to support my family, pay rent and even support the same aunt who denied me chance to go to school,” narrates Joyce.

Joyce believes that respecting each other and patience help.
