What have you done?

They live in shabby places, eating what they find around but with dreams that one day they will sleep in a big mansion and eat good food. They don’t know who will come to their rescue and make their dreams come true as they feel isolated.

Should we let these children in the streets?

Living in the streets imposes a great danger to them. At times, they are raped, sodomized, forced to take drugs or cigarettes and are forced to carry heavy goods and many things that put their lives at risk. Little by little their behaviour too starts to change and they become a big threat to our society.

They ask anyone they meet “tithandizeni bwana” (help us boss) so that they can buy food to eat at home. Some of these kids are under age, with brothers and sisters, and living with a single parent.

They are in the street because of family problems like marriage separation, fights between parents which instill fear in their life.. It is ironic that although some of these children’s parents have small scale businesses, the begging on the streets constitutes an important source of income to their families due to pettiness of their parents’ businesses.

“Amasiki” is what they are called meaning Street kids. As the population of these kids in our cities continues to increase, it seems there are only few people or organizations that are seriously concerned about these kids.

These kids also want to have a better life like all the children living in nice houses, going to a good school, wearing nice clothes, sleeping on a comfortable bed, eating nice meals, and the like.

Questions remain: What do we think when we see them in the streets? How could we feel if our own children were in the streets begging?

Not mere bricks

We were told that Andiamo Education Institutions would have a new girls’ hostel. When we saw trucks bringing bricks, sand… we were sure we would have it. Obviously, it was good news. Good, because the hostels we have right now would not be enough for girls from both the college and secondary school. The future was alarming too. In September, this year, we shall have a Form IV class. This meant we would not have enough accommodation for girls. In Malawi, we say, “If you educate a girl, you have educated the whole nation”. By not allowing girls to come to the school because of lack of accommodation, we were doing injustice not only to the girls themselves but also to the nation as a whole.

Today the hostel is taking shape. In September, we will be able to house all the girls in the campus. We may be worried that ‘where are we going to get the beds?’ but the fact is that the hostel is now there.

The presence of Franco, an Italian volunteer, at the building site is enough for us to thank those that continue to collaborate with Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust. Some we have seen them because they have travelled all the way from Italy to see us. Others, we have not seen and met them. However, their invisible hands are becoming more visible through their support to us.

The other side of White Kananji

White Kananji’s talent, was spotted during Alleluya Band show in Balaka. He is only 23 but he has all the skills a dancer would want to have. Those who have watched him think he has no bones because he can hang his legs around the neck and this has led some to think White uses magic.

A Standard 7 dropout, White grew up with his grand parents after his father died when he was a baby and his mother married another man who couldn’t stay with him. He spent much of his childhood with his grand parents.

White thought that living with her grandparents would be easy and that life would be easy but it wasn’t to be. His grand mother started to drink ‘Kachaso’ (locally distilled beer) excessively, which brought no peace in the house. There was nobody to search and cook food for him and some times he was sleeping with an empty stomach.

White started cultivating in other people’s fields in exchange for food. At the age of 16, he went to Lilongwe where his uncle was doing construction work to search for greener pastures.

“One day I went out with my uncle to a Chinese national residence where he was constructing a house. There I met kids who were doing acrobatics and I had a chance to learn from them. After I was satisfied with the skills I acquired, I started performing in different areas in Lilongwe where I was asking people to pay me so that I could show them how I do it,” White narrates that because life in the city was much difficult for him, he decided to come back home.

Then his lucky day arrived. Alleluya Band was performing at Ostia Primary School. He showed Alleluya Band what he is made up of. He got overwhelming morale from people who came to watch the famous band performing live.

Paul Subili and Cos Chiwalo decided to invite White to show his skills to the patron of the group Fr Mario Pacifici. Fr Mario was impressed. He was approved to be a member of Alleluya Band.

Although life is full of ups and down, White says since he joined the band, his life has improved tremendously.

“I am able to buy clothes, food and other necessities. I don’t need to go around showing my acrobatic tactics to survive as I used to do,” says White.

However, money has not made him forget about education. He has a part time teacher who is helping him in the morning hours.

“I feel starting again from Standard 7 will difficult for me. I just want to improve in how to write and read.” White believes that time for him to go in class was already wasted.

one of the hostel under construction

He says this is possible despite the fuel problem rocking the country.

“We are concerned with the problem of fuel because for us to transport cement from Blantyre we use our own transport,” says Makina.

Philipo is working with a team of 9 builders and Franco Fiorina, a volunteer from Italy who arrived on Friday 13th to help in the construction of the the hostel which he started last year after finishing a secondary school class block in 28 days.

Meanwhile, the construction of the community hospital is almost ready. According to Makina who is also in charge of the construction work, the completion of the project has being delayed because of the scarcity of fuel.

Both projects are being carried out by Marandimo Building Contractors and Civil Engineering which is under Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust

Balaka market burnt down Petrol suspected as the cause

Vendors in Balaka main market have nothing to depend on after fire gutted down almost half of the market on Saturday night. The fire which started around 9 pm was extinguished by well wishers who rushed to the scene of the accident before Fire brigades from Zomba City Council (89 km from Balaka) joined them at around 11 pm.

People are suspecting that the fire started from here (under the tree)

Although the fire was much scary, some managed to rescue few things from their shops while others never managed. According to Balaka Police Public Relations Officer Titani Chadwala, some bad mannered people looted shops on the other side of the market which was not affected by fire thereby taking advantage of the accident. He also confirmed that 100 shops were destroyed during the accident.

What used to be sheds reduced to ashes

People have blamed Balaka Town Council for not having equipment which can put out fire during such incidences. According to our sources at Balaka Town Council who asked for anonymity, vendors are blamed for not taking safety measures when doing business in the market.

“We have been advising them not to keep flammable things in their shops but they never listened,” say the sources.

Balaka Main Market has fire extinguishers equipment but during the accident people failed to use them as there was not even a single drop of water from the pipes.

Government officials, Montfort Fathers, a musician Lucius Banda, former Member of Parliament Ronald Chanthunya were spotted at the scene of the accident during the night to see for themselves and sympathize with the vendors .

Lucius Banda popularly known as “Soldier” said that he was saddened by the inferno as a lot of merchandises has been destroyed which is a big setback since for some this was the only source of income.

According to police publicist, the cause of the fire has not yet been established as investigations are still underway but some people are suspecting that the fire started from the shop whose owner was allegedly keeping jerry cans containing petrol. The suspect is in police custody for questioning.

Scarcity of fuel in the country has forced many people to keep jerry cans of fuel in their houses which is becoming a big threat to their lives and property.

This is not the first time Balaka has had fire accident. In 2006 a house belonging to former member of parliament for Balaka South, late Thom Mnesa was gutted down and property worth millions of kwacha was destroyed. In June last year Nthandizi Market was also destroyed and this was after Balaka District Education Offices were also destroyed.
