Malawians should expect economic hardships

Malawians should expect to dig deeper into their pockets to survive in this new year 2012. According to a monthly survey report released by a Roman Catholic body, Centre for Social Concern (CFSC), the cost of living is becoming deplorable in the country.

things are becoming expensive every day

The survey was conducted in major cities in the country namely Mzuzu, Zomba, Blantyre and Lilongwe.

The report indicates that an average family of six to survive in the month of December 2011 had to spend K61,173.00, K60.080.00, K65,000.00 and K69,303.00 in Mzuzu, Zomba, Blantyre and Lilongwe respectively.

Recently the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been pressurizing the government of Malawi to devalue  the Malawi Kwacha again after devaluing it in August 2011 by 10%.

There is much fear that problems which are rocking the country may cause private investors to close their offices and companies and leave a lot of people unemployed as some investors have already done.

Some economic experts have expressed fear that if government will not take appropriate action things will become  worse each and every day like shortage of fuel, shortage of forex and increasing of price on basic commodities which Malawians are facing now.

Donors have been blaming the Professor Bingu Wa Muthalika and his Democratic Progressive Party led government of bad governance and this has led to some of them to freeze aid.

Some Christmas gifts will come and go but this one will not. The Department of Performing Arts of the Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi has awarded a certificate to Thom Damba Junior, a Principal of Andiamo music school, for completing successfully a short music course from 4 – 17 December 2011.

The training covered Music Theory, Introduction to Music Instruments, Posture and Handling of Instruments, Fingering for Brass and Wood Wind Instruments, Compass of the Instruments, Tonal Registers of Instruments, Over Blowing and Harmonic series of wind instruments and technical fingering, Transposition of wind Instruments, Scales (major and minor), Formation of Chords and Chords Progressions.

The training was made possible by the cooperation that exists between Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) and CMB/LAMA. There are plans that in future students from Andiamo Music School should pursue further music studies with the University of Malawi.

2012 with hope

Tommy

Christmas is here and soon we shall be in the year 2012. Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) agrees with the Holy Father in his World Day of Peace message that the year now ending has been marked by a “rising sense of frustration” at the crisis looming over society, the world of labour and the economy… it seems as if a shadow has fallen over our time, preventing us from clearly seeing the light of day.

The Holy Father is inviting us to look to 2012 with an attitude of confident trust. He tells us of the beautiful image in Psalm 130 where the Psalmist says that the people of faith wait for the Lord “more that those who watch for the morning” but wait for him with firm hope because they know that he will bring light, mercy and salvation. He reminds us that this waiting was born of the experience of the Chosen People, who realized that God taught them to look at the world in its truth and not to be overwhelmed by tribulation.

AYCT looks to 2012 with hope. As the Fr. Mario Pacifici, who is also the founding trustee says in his 14 December Birthday message, we should thank God “for the simple and great gift of life with its joy and sorrows”.

Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust wishes a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2012 year to all its partners here and abroad.

Admarc in a thrilling game on Sunday at Balaka stadium.

Chilobwe United receiving a symbolic cheque from Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust Director Andrew Galeta

Anderson Zimena and Frank Chikufenji’s goals after 33 and 81 minutes respectively were enough to end Manjawira’s unbeaten record in the league. The visitors’ consolation goal came through Duli Lidaka at the 75th minute. For becoming champions, Chilobwe received K130 000 and a glittering trophy while Manjawira got K80 000 and a miniature.

Played on a soggy pitch, the game started on a good note with both teams displaying spectacular and satisfying football before the jam-packed stadium. Chilobwe dictated the pace of the game in the opening minutes probing into Manjawira’s territory with ease before the visitors picked up.

Chilobwe celebrating its victory

Zimena, who enjoyed a grand game, put Chilobwe in the lead after a defensive blunder when he pounced on a free ball and latched it into the net. Although they were down by a goal, the Thango Paipi side continued a spirited fight. Youthful striker Hanleck Kaunda and attacking midfielder Francis Paipi displayed skillful football constantly pricking the territory’s defense.

The visitors leveled the scores at 75 minutes through Duli Lidaka, a goal that could be blamed on childish goalkeeping by Kabeson Kagoli. Just when penalty shootouts were looming, substitute Chikufenji grabbed a winner with an effortless header nine minutes to stoppage time.

Paipi conceded the loss saying their finishing line was blunt and congratulated Chilobwe for winning.

“We weren’t sharp upfront. We struggled to finish as our strikers were eclipsed. [And] After that equalizer we relaxed a little bit, that cost us the game. My boys played good football but it wasn’t our day,” said the former Admarc Tigers striker.

His counterpart Fred Datchi said: “It was a balanced game but we played as a team and converted our chances.” Super Rangers secured a third-place with a 2-0 victory over Pack & Go and got K60 000 and a miniature while fourth-placed Pack & Go received K40 000 and a miniature. Phalula Dynamos were voted a Fairplay team and got K20 000.

All the four teams that lost in the quarter-finals each received K10 000. On the individual category Abdul Mpanga (Rangers) and Wyson Sanjika (Pack & Go) each received K10 000 for being top goal scorer and best player of the tournament respectively.

Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) executive director Andrew Galeta said the organization will continue sponsoring the league.

Ideologies don’t save the world – Pope Benedict XVI

Youth of Andiamo during the Sunday Mass

Pope Benedict XVI has devoted his message for XLV World Day of Peace which falls on 1 January 2012 to the theme of education: Educating Young People in Justice and Peace in the conviction that “the young, with their enthusiasm and idealism, can offer new hope to the world”. (Download the message in pdf)

Realizing that the year ending has been marked by a rising sense of frustration at the crisis looming over society, the world of labour and economy, a crisis whose roots are primarily cultural and anthropological, the Holy Father invites his faithfuls to look to 2012 with Psalm 130 attitude of confident trust.

The Psalmist says that people of faith wait for the Lord “more than those who watch for the morning” (v.6); they wait for him with firm hope because they know that he will bring light mercy and salvation.

“This waiting was born of the experience of the Chosen People, who realized that God taught them to look at the world in its truth and not to be overwhelmed by tribulation,” says the pope.

The pope believes that this expectation is powerful and evident in young people and that is why his thoughts turn to them to the contribution, which they can and must make to society.

The pope tells the educators that education is the most interesting and difficult adventure in life. Educating – from the Latin educere, he reminds, means leading young people to move beyond themselves and introducing them to reality, towards a fullness that leads to growth.

This process is fostered by the encounter of two freedoms, that of adults and that of the young. As such it [process] calls for responsibility on the part of the learners, who he says “must be open to being led to the knowledge of reality” and on the part of educators, who “must be ready to give of themselves.”

“For this reason,” continues the Holy Father “today more than ever we need authentic witnesses, and not simply people who parcel out rules and facts; we need witnesses capable of seeing farther than others because their life is so much broader. A witness is someone who first lives the life he proposes to others.”

Addressing those in charge of educational institutions, the pope says that with great sense of responsibility, they must ensure that the dignity of each person is always respected and appreciated.

“Let them be concerned that every young person be able to discover his or her own vocation and helped to develop his or her God-given gifts,” the pope continues to say may they [in charge of educational institutions] reassure families that their children can receive an education that does not conflict with their consciences and their religious principles.

Pope Benedict XVI has also emphatically said to young people that “it is not ideologies that save the world, but only a return to the living God, our Creator, the guarantor of our freedom, the guarantor of what is really good and true … an unconditional return to God who is the measure of what is right and who at the same time is everlasting love. And what could ever save us apart from love?” he asks.

This message has come at a right moment mainly because education is one of the main pillars of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT). Despite having a number of Nursery schools, AYCT runs also a secondary school, computer school and a technical college and there are dreams to have its own university in future.

It finally rained

Rains in Balaka, 19 December 2011

At last, it rained in some parts of Balaka including Andiamo. I hear Kankao, which is 11km away from Andiamo, did not receive any drop. This is according to one watchman working for a private home in Balaka town, who hails from Kankao.

Few things happened last week when it couldn’t rain despite some signs of rain clouds.

Before Fr. Mario Pacifici celebrated mass on the day of his birthday, 14 December, where he prayed for rains, Chief Nsamala of Balaka led his people to the river to take a bathe that was to clean them of any “impurities” that denied people rains. Traditionally this act brings rains.

But it rained when no one expected it, Sunday. Some people did not “want” the rains this day because it was yet another day when Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) through its partners in Italy organised a final match for a football trophy worth MK0.5 Million.

The scenes at the stadium revealed that despite a drought of sports trophies in the area, people were also dying of rains and never wanted the same rains they longed for to either disrupt or divide them.

The Balaka Stadium is built in such a way that there is only one covered stand, which they call VIP – for very important people or in other words, invited persons. As was expected, those that were supposed to be at this stand were supposed to be those that were invited or those that paid K100, which was double the gate fee of K50.

This was not to be. The raindrops were enough to send the “uninvited” to the high table to enjoy the banquet of a football match that was made possible with the existing coexistence of AYCT and Italian volunteers from the covered stand. They were all invited and no one seemed to care that the “uninvited” were among them.

The muddy ground provided the slow motion pictures only enjoyed when watching a match on television. It was Chilobwe Football Club that won the match. Chilobwe Football Club comes from the other side of Balaka town where Chibuku beer (opaque beer) is sold. It is no secret that after the match, people from the area went partying. Coincidentally, this was the type of beer that Malawi’s ancestors drank when the rains they prayed for had eventually come.

Christmas Message by Fr. Mario Pacifici

Christmas 2011

Today, 14 December, is my birthday
and I invite you to join me in thanking the Lord
for the simple and great gift of life,
with its joy and sorrows.

Day by day it is a renewed commitment
in order to answer the call to life
to always live with joy and generosity
for donating it in its fullness.

A journalist asked Mother Teresa of Calcutta:
“What should change in the Church?”
She answered: “You and me”.
The child Jesus is coming again
and with trust we have to ask ourselves
“What can I change in my life,
for the world and the Church to be better?”

“If you accept that
the face of your neighbour is not similar to yours,
accept also that their opinion are different from yours.”

From Malawi the wish that Christmas
will gift the sobriety,
the universal brotherhood
the solidly love
and prepare our refectories
to welcome Jesus with joy
and also who is near and far from us

fr. Mario

On the move

All is set for Tinyadire Moyo Project. Edward received the bicycle today from Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (ACYT) and his first destination is Petro Village.

Fr. Mario Pacifici (left), Jack Edward (centre) and Patrick Bwanali holding the bicycle

Edward will go around the villages sensitizing people on the dangers of HIV/AIDS and on how live positively with the virus. From these visits, he will have the task of forming work groups that will help him with the mission.

Orizzonte Malawi has supported Edward with a bicycle to make easier his movements to the villages. Some of his visits will be done in cooperation with the microcredit project of agriculture (Get Up Stand Up) with preview visits to groups of farmers during the agriculture season.

A meeting will also be held annually with workers of all sections of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust to sensitise them on pandemic. Edward tested positive some years ago but he lives positively with his life.
